Who is your Best Friend?
Morgan Bost, age 12, won the Be Kind to Animals contest for Best Essay with the following submission. Morgan also illustrated her essay with the artwork below.
Who is your best friend? Mine is my cat, Gracie. Gracie is a good friend because when I talk to her she never criticizes my opinions. She always knows when I am feeling down and tries to fix it. Lots of people love their cats, but can't take care of them. Maybe it is because they're old, sick, or they can't have one where they are moving to. They might dump them on the side of the road or put them in a shelter. Most animal shelters are over-crowded and have been forced to resort to putting them down. To help keep the animal population in control, people should spay and neuter their pets. You can also help by adopting shelter animals. To become a volunteer contact the Humane Society of Alamance County. By doing this you can help save animals' lives.

How I have Helped Animals
Every year around my birthday me and my friends do a lemonade stand. Last year we made about $100.00. The year before that we made about $124.00. We gave it all to the Humane Society. Sometimes me and my mom take homeless dogs to the shelter. Treat animals like you want to be treated. My family are members of the Humane Society. We always donate money to them. Be kind to animals. Thank you!

Taking Care of Buddy

I remember meeting Buddy on my grandma's front porch last summer. Somebody had taken good care of him but I could tell he was lost because he had no collar and was very thirsty and hungry. My grandma said I could feed him and play with him until we found him a home.

Bddy loved to run around my gandma's yard and climb trees. When I would run to get in my mom's car he would try to trip me. He loved to sit in my lap and kiss me.

In the fall I started to volunteer for the Humane Society at Petsmart because I love cats and I wanted to help take care of them. Many of the cats and kittens there were once lonely, lost and hungry just like Buddy. They now seemed happy. Oreo and Navy liked to paw my head and play ball while others like Sunkist have come out of their cage for the first time to sit on my lap.

In the winter, my grandma told me she could no longer keep Buddy. I worried he would be cold and hurt. I asked Pat Woods if the Humane Society could take him and she said yes! After getting Buddy the medical care he needed they put him in Petsmart and he found a home in a family with kids!

Buddy and the Humane Society have taught me how important it is to take care of your pets. Every day at home and at Petsmart I have to clean the litter boxes, sweep out their cages, give them water, feed them, give them medicine and then play with them. Don't get them if you can't afford to feed them, love on them, or get tthem spayed or neutered. Buddy could have died or ended up in the shelter if it weren't for my grandma and the Humane Society. I feel very sad for the cats that this happens to.

Furry Friends

I take pride in being part of the HSAC volunteer program. Every time I go to Pet Smart to fulfill my commitment with the cats, I feel good about myself. My responsibilities at Pet Smart are to make sure that their cages are clean, have fresh food and clean water. I enjoy playing and caring for them. Being a volunteer has its rewards, and my reward is making new furry friends and knowing that I've helped in making a difference in my community. Animals need to be in a good and safe home. They also need to have a clean and safe environment. Animals need to me taken to the vet when necessary. No animal deserves to be neglected or mistreated. Animals have feelings, and they should be treated right. The importance of having your pet neutered or spayed is to stop overpopulation and in keeping them healthy. We have a lot of stray animals on the street that get injured or killed. Being a pet owner comes with great responsibility. It's not a temporary job, but it's a long term commitment. Animals don't ask for much, all they want is love and affection. Then make excellent companions!
