Our 10,000th Spay/Neuter!
2007 marked a milestone for the HSAC's low cost Spay/Neuter program. Since the program
began in 1988, 10,000 spay or neuter surgeries have been scheduled for the dogs and cats of the
residents of our community. To celebrate this achievement, our annual Holiday Social on December 7th
had a wonderful Champagne and Cake theme for our members and volunteers.
Spay/Neuter Clinic Visit In May 2006, in preparation for running our own spay/neuter clinic, several HSAC board members visited the Forsyth Spay Neuter Clinic in Kernersville. The clinic offers its low cost sterilization services to pet owners and rescue organizations in the Piedmont Triad. In the photos below, a van has arrived filled with dogs and cats from a local rescue organization in another county. The dogs and cats wait for their turn in rows of cages before being prepped for surgery. Two vets worked non-stop throughout the morning to finish surgeries before noontime.
![]() We feel that providing the residents of Alamance County with services at our own low cost spay/neuter clinic will be the best way to decrease the high euthanasia numbers at the local animal shelter. Here we come and there we go!
Thanks to Sam & Vicky Hunt and Hunt Electric for giving the HSAC a cool and useful truck. Also many thanks to Barry Stephenson for designing the artwork and Marty's Art Supply for applying it. The truck has been used alot so far. In it we have stored donated pet food for Katrina victims and we stored and transported yardsale goods. Don't know how we got along without it! ![]() In June, 2005, we bought a small house that is centrally located in our county. For now, we are renting the house so that we can pay off the mortgage but we are beginning to put a plan in place in order to get the clinic operational in 2010. In the meantime we are investigating grants and money raising campaigns as well as researching what our equipment needs will be. We hope to start with weekend clinics for the spaying and neutering of feral cats and of the pets of low income people. These are main sources of animal overpopulation in our community resulting in thousands of deaths each year in the gas chamber at the municipal animal shelter.
Our foster cats and kittens have moved into comfortable cubbies at the new PetSmart on University Dr. Many successful adoptions have been made since the store opened in July, 2005. "Thank you!" to PetSmart and to the dedicated volunteers who go to the store to feed, clean up after, play and socialize the kitties. Each week the new Rock Creek Journal spotlights one of our foster dogs or cats in their weekly newspaper which serves eastern Guilford County and western Alamance County. We are grateful for this additional publicity for our Rescue and Foster Program. In 2005, the HSAC started receiving donations and payments on our website with the use of Paypal.
