The Humane Society of Alamance County was chartered by the State of North Carolina in May of 1971. Re-organized in 1988, the Humane Society of Alamance County is a non-profit membership organization. We receive no financial assistance from state or federal agencies or from the Humane Society of the United States. The Humane Society is not affiliated with Burlington Animal Services, the Animal Shelter or the Pet Adoption Center. Spay/neuter For over a decade we have provided our local residents with the only affordable Spay/Neuter Program available in our county. Those wishing to use our program call us to arrange for an appointment at one of our many participating veterinary hospitals. Animal overpopulation is a major problem in Alamance County so we are dedicated to reducing the numbers of unwanted dogs and cats. To expand our spay/neuter efforts, we bought a house in 2005 to convert into our own clinic. We have been renting the house since then and using the income from the rent payments to pay down the mortgage. Our fundraising efforts for 2009 will concentrate on paying off the mortgage and raising the thousands of dollars needed to outfit a clinic. With the downturn in the economy, this won't be an easy task. We welcome your support! Foster/rescueSince 2001, we have been able to rescue homeless or abused dogs and cats. The numbers of animals we save depends on funds we have available to cover the cost of rescue as well as volunteers willing to act as foster parents until permanent homes can be found. We are very fortunate to house some of our foster cats and kittens in cubbies at the Petsmart Luv-A-Pet Adoption Center located on University Drive in Burlington. Humane EducationEducation is a key effort of HSAC. We strive to increase public awareness of pet owners' responsibilities through our quarterly newsletter, information booths at public events, and our website. Volunteers conduct programs at local schools and children's groups teaching young people about responsible pet care. We also offer a Powerpoint Presentation about HSAC to civic groups in our community. How do I join the Humane Society of Alamance County? There are several membership levels.
